Gambling in culture
September 19th, 2008Gambling has been over the centuries a major incident among human beings. With the curious bent of mind of wanting to make a bet on the outcome of something and winning to gain something, especially of significant material value, on the result of the bet, man has loved a game of gambling from the ancient age to the modern. The sense of risk and adventure seem to be in human blood that makes him wager and play to win. Most people think that gambling fuels their sense of adrenalin and feeling lucky. It doesn’t cost as much as well - for, people would rather prefer waiting for luck rather than strain for work. And luck has smiled many a time on selected people, making them legends for the others, and that is why, even today people are levitated towards casinos and online gambling competitions. It is a streak of the divine, the luck factor that draws more and more people in the world of gambling.
It is so elemental, that many people all across the world are connected to gambling, and other forms of gambling. And indeed gambling has become an important part of human culture as well. Interestingly gambling’s earliest origin and reference comes from the exotic orient and its modern popularity among European and North American patrons is a much later occurrence. As a matter of fact it is almost in 2300 B.C. that the first mention of gambling is found in Chinese traditional records and in many ancient epics such as the Indian epic of Mahabharata too gambling finds a mention.
Entry of gambling in human culture and its strong ties are amply borne out by how much it has become not only a part of creative art but also so many of gambling jargons find place in language and in daily use of conversation even as their origin at a gaming table seems to be forgotten.
